"Gedeg" distribution day - No 2
On Sunday 23 July 2006, we distributed the second "gedeg" delivery. We managed to distribute 300 sheets of "gedeg" to Bicak and Ngunut residents. The "gedeg" arrived in Klaten at around 4.00 pm and we immediately began distributing them in Bicak, and the next morning in Ngunut.
Not all the households are rebuilding using "gedeg" ; those with the funds are already rebuilding their homes using bricks, which is also good for the restoration of the local economy, as this is a brick-making district.
We work with the community to determine which household requires sheets of "gedeg" for their walls. Through discussion, it became evident that highest priority must be households with young children and older people, for they suffer the most from the difficult conditions because the drafty tents or shacks do not really offer decent protection from the elements.
Once we identified the households with the most pressing need for housing, we gave them a coupon, which they then used to redeem their five sheets of "gedeg".
We have now distributed gedeg to 81 households, and we have registered another 70 households who have asked to be put on the list for the next delivery. I hope that we can meet their request.
These temporary "homes" will soon be replaced with fine "gedeg-walled" houses.
